Ruth Sophie Obituary

Private services will be held for Ruth E. Valentin Sophie, 73, who entered the arms of the Lord on Wednesday, October 12, 2022, in her home, surrounded by the love and care of her beloved family.

Ms. Ruth, the daughter of the late Antonia Velez Valentin and the late Rafael Valentin was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico.  She came to the mainland of the United States in 1959.  Ms. Ruth lived in Queens, New York for a decade, followed by residing in Jersey City, New Jersey  for over over twenty years before relocating to Linden, New Jersey six years ago.

Ms. Ruth was an administrative secretary in Public School #37, employed by the Jersey City Board of Education for thirty-six year and she was also a member of the NJEA.  She earned her well-deserved retirement in 2018.

Mrs. Ruth Sophie was known as the “Purple Lady” and the “Unicorn Lady” and sometimes as the “Purple Unicorn Lady”.   “Ms. Ruth” as known affectionately to so many, loved to collect unicorns and most anything purple.  She also enjoyed accumulating different kinds of tea’s, herbs, books, and recipes.  Ms. Ruth was practical and wise.  She studied photography and she was well versed about astrology, Christianity, and Buddhism.  Ms. Ruth cherished her ancestry and her family tree.  She spent her free time watching shows about the mysteries of the past and the wonders of the unknown.  Her own favorite style of design was Art Deco.  Ms. Ruth was definitely one of the first to get up and dance at an event.  She was so outgoing, and people simply loved her.  Ms. Ruth helped so many people over her career and her lifetime.  She was also involved in campaign efforts for politicians and did a lot of volunteer work.  Ms. Ruth was a truth seeker and a supporter of the arts. She loved to watch church broadcasts from the Oasis Church of Rahway.  Gardening, baking, and cooking were truly her passions.  Ms. Ruth weathered many a storm, and she was brave and courageous.  Ms. Ruth was a real lady’s lady; forever regal, classy, and funny.  She enriched our lives and brought us together. Our love for her will last forever and her memory will comfort us as we continue on without her.  We thank you, our daughter, wife, mother, mother-in-law, sister, grandmother, family, and friend for everything……. as she now joins her loving son Adam, her adoring parents, and her friends in Heaven.  Amen.

Ms. Ruth is survived by her son, Eric Sophie; her two grandchildren, Mechaiah and Micah, her two sisters, Gladys Valentin, and Blanca Malave; her seven brothers, David Valentin, Edwin Valentin, Johnny Valentin, Nelson Valentin, Luis E. Valentin, Rafael Valentin, Jr. and Wilfredo Valentin; her daughter-in-law, Sandy Sophie and her children and family; her former husband, Glenn Sophie; her extended family, friends, co-workers and neighbors.
