“Mr. Ed”, the son of the late Bertha Ptaschinski Steinheim and the late Emil Steinheim was born in Irvington, New Jersey and he lived in Colonia prior to settling in Linden twenty-five years ago.
He had a storied thirty-year career as an electrical foreman and supervisor for Joyal Products in Linden prior to earning his well-deserved retirement in 2001.
“Mr. Ed” was quite a guy with a myriad of interests. He loved hitting the open road with his tag along trailer, camping out in Mother Nature and enjoying all she has to offer. The crackling of the campfire at the end of the day brought about a peaceful and relaxed conclusion to what usually was a jam-packed day of activities and adventures. A free spirit, “Mr. Ed” would go camping up and down the east coast and as far west as Tennessee, but the state of Maine held a special place in his heart. He would often use his quad to explore the many remote areas that a car could never venture into, and this provided “Mr. Ed” both a sense of freedom and exhilaration. When he settled in for a “homebody” type of day, he could always be found watching old fashion Westerns on the television. “Mr. Ed” was forever the life of the party and socializing just became second nature to him. It was effortless because “Mr. Ed” enjoyed meeting and talking to people so much. Some of his favorite haunts included the different American Legions and the VFW’s. Even with all of this, the everyday world of “Mr. Ed” really revolved around his family, but especially his grandchildren. There was nothing sweeter in life, than getting to spend time with his family, whether it was for a quick visit, a celebration of a holiday or special event or simply sitting around in the backyard, maybe enjoying a BBQ and shooting the breeze.
He was predeceased by his four siblings, Edna McCormack, Elmer Steinheim, Kenneth Steinheim and Robert Steinheim, and Maryann O’Neill Steinheim, his former wife and the mother of his four children.
“Mr. Ed” is survived by his wife, Cathy Gabrish; his four children, Kevin Steinheim, Mark Steinheim, Sheryl Saccardi and her husband, Neil and Melissa Quarino and her husband, Anthony; his four grandchildren, Rose Quarino, Amber Saccardi, Brieanna Saccardi and Nickolas Saccardi; his two sisters, Evelyn Mulcahey and Barbara Lang and “Mr. Ed’s” numerous nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends.
Life was never dull when you were in “Mr. Ed’s” company. He left behind many broken hearts, but also great stories to tell which will bring a smile to your lips, a sparkle to your eyes and an eruption of laughter. What a wonderful way to go through life and a great legacy to leave to others. Even though he will be dearly missed, may “Mr. Ed” forever be remembered as the character he truly was!
