Evelyn, born to the long-standing West Brighton residents, the late Eleanor Klein Standing and the late Nathaniel E. Standing, was truly a native Staten Islander. She was born and raised in West Brighton, Staten Island and she resided in New Dorp on Milton Avenue for 40 wonderful years before relocating to Linden, New Jersey in 1998.
Evelyn’s long and fruitful career began in 1972 when the Staten Island Law Firm of Sangiorgio, Fragano, Rebllo & Barone, Esqs. gainfully employed Evelyn, a legal secretary, for well over ten years. Her trusted mentor, a partner in the firm, became the Hon. Louis Sangiorgio who was a great influence in her legal life. While working full time Evelyn attended night classes at the College of Staten Island where she attained her Paralegal I & II Degrees and, in 1983 Evelyn went on to immerse herself working for Supreme Court Justice, the Hon. Charles A. Kuffner, Jr. in Richmond County for the next 14 years. She then went on to the last leg of her legal career with the Chief Administrative Judge of the State of New York, the Hon. Jonathan Lippman for 6 years before retiring in September 2002 from the Office of Court Administration in Manhattan. In 2001, Evelyn was only a block away from the World Trade Center bombing and her building had to be evacuated. She and five of her co-workers walked 28 blocks where they split up and at that point, Evelyn took refuge for the night. She continued to work within the World Trade Center Exposure Zone five days a week between September 11, 2001, and her retirement.
Even after her retirement, Evelyn remained an active volunteer in New Jersey. She served as the Recording Secretary for the AARP Linden Chapter 1894 for over ten years, where her outstanding shorthand abilities were kept razor sharp. Evelyn, the current chairlady, was one of the founding members in 2007 of the Knitting & Crocheting for a Cause Program at the J.T. Gregorio Center in Linden. Under her guidance, this program has distributed countless of lap afghans, chemo hats, baby hats and blankets throughout Union County for the past seventeen years. Evelyn also enjoyed a ten plus year stint in her dual positions of Financial Secretary and Telephone Squad Leader for the Linden Senior Men & Women’s Club, before handing the reins over to another member. During her membership in this club, no one was more excited and pleased than her family and friends when Evelyn was chosen to receive the honor of being Linden’s Outstanding Senior Citizen of the Year in 2017. She was feted with a lovely and dignified ceremony at the J.T. Gregorio Center in Linden in recognition for her exceptional services rendered to the senior citizens and the community of Linden, New Jersey.
Evelyn was predeceased by her first husband and the father of her children, Frederick J Burnett (1972) and her second husband, Pasquale Marchione (2012), as well as, her three brothers, Nathaniel E. Standing, Jr., Donald J. Standing, Sr., and Richard C. Standing, Sr. and her sister-in-law, Mary Standing.
Evelyn is survived by her two sons, Robert Burnett and his companion, Mary Taddeo and Peter Burnett and his wife, Dawn Preston Burnett; her five grandchildren Kristen Burnett-Burke and her husband, Matthew, Robert Burnett, Conor Burnett, Kyle Burnett and his wife, Alexandra and Jessica Preston; her three great-grandchildren, Gavin Burke and twins, Jack Burke & Charlotte Burke; her two sisters-in-law, Jean Standing and Loretta Standing and Evelyn’s many neighbors and friends.
Evelyn was a woman dedicated to helping anyone in need and she never knew how to say ”no”. She was an advocate for the underdog, a confidant when someone needed to talk, a taxi service for her friends when they couldn’t get around and Evelyn was a woman of great spirituality, who sought peace and tranquility from her church. She was a force of nature with a strong opinion that she never silenced and an independent woman who always spoke the truth, whether you liked it or not. Evelyn was a true friend to all, but in reality her core mission in life was to work hard to provide for her family that she loved so dearly and to be the best wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and sister that she could be. Her family was her world, the center of her life and for that we all loved Evelyn. She will always hold a piece of our hearts as we now go forward in this life without her. Fly free Evelyn……May you rest in the Eternal Peace that the Lord promised you.
