Almeta Brown Obituary

Mrs. Almeta Barr Brown, 85, left to be with the Lord when she passed on Wednesday, January 26, 2022, in the Center for Hope Hospice Father Hudson House in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

Family and friends are invited to the visitation in the Kowalski Funeral Home, 515 Roselle Street, Linden on Tuesday, February 1st. from 9:00-11:00AM.  At 11:00AM there will be a service in the funeral home, followed by the prayers of committal which will precede the burial in the family plot in Rosedale Cemetery in Linden, New Jersey.

Mrs. Brown, the daughter of the late Daisy Pressley Barr and the late Henry Watson Barr, was born in Lake City, South Carolina.  She lived in Miami, Florida and Newark, New Jersey prior to settling in Linden, New Jersey fifty years ago.

Mrs. Brown began her career as a manager for the Electro Catheter Corp. in Rahway, New Jersey from 1970 to 1980.  She then went on to become a bus driver and she worked for a variety of bus companies throughout Union County for eighteen years, including Vogel Bus Company, Ugo and J & J Transportation.  Mrs. Brown started enjoying her retirement in 2006.

Mrs. Brown was very talented in the art of knitting and crocheting.  In her younger years, she could throw a mean bowling ball.  A true shopaholic, Mrs. Brown didn’t want to have anything to do with the online purchases.  She traveled her way up & down the state, stopping in all her favorite stores in all the major malls, where she would wind up with more purchases than could fit in the trunk of the car.  Hats were her weakness!  Mrs. Brown never went to church without wearing a stylish hat and she has complied a beautiful and extensive collection of headwear.  When she was all spruced up and it was time to travel, Atlantic City was calling her name.  Mrs. Brown loved to visit and see if she could come home with more than she went down with.  Cooking, cooking, cooking – another of her favorite pastimes!  Mrs. Brown so loved to cook for everyone that even if she was invited to someone’s house for dinner, she would usually show up with half the prepared meal in tow.  Everyone thoroughly enjoyed her delicacies!

Mrs. Brown married the love of her life, James Brown on April 13, 1954, and together they raised a wonderful family.  Unfortunately she lost James in 2008.  Mrs. Brown was also predeceased by her two daughters, Patricia Ann Brown (2018) and Monita Chantay Brown (2021) and her seven siblings, Ollie, Mattie, Keith, Theodus, Preston, Roosevelt and Curtis.

Mrs. Brown is survived by her daughter, Hattie Brown-James; her two sons, James L. Brown and Medford L. Brown and his former spouse, Bridget Brown; her six grandchildren, Sade Chism and her husband, Keshanti, Courtney Reid, Angel Nelson, Lindel Brown, Travis Brown and Dominique Brown; her three great grandchildren, Sekhem, Emery and Khouri and her three sisters, Joyce Jackson and her husband, Calvin, Daisy Barr and Mary Sims and her husband, Edward, her three grand pups, Dinero, Pacino and Rebel and a host of other relatives, neighbors and friends, especially Calvin Rohan, Niecy Smalls, Hilda Asbury, Russell Green and Janice Cosby.

Mrs. Brown was the center of life for her family, and she had an abundance of love for everyone in her circle.  She will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
