Sophie Elizabeth Szurlej Ledzian

Mrs. Sophie Elizabeth Szurlej Ledzian, age 95, of Asheville, North Carolina, died Wednesday, September 26, 2018 in the Pisgah Manor in Candler, North Carolina.

Visitation will take place in the Kowalski Funeral Home, 515 Roselle St., Linden, on Friday, October 5th. from 3:00 – 7:00PM.  On Saturday, October 6th. at 11:15AM, family and friends are asked to gather directly at St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Roman Catholic Church in Linden, where a funeral mass will be offered at 11:30AM.  The entombment will follow in the family crypt in St. Gertrude Cemetery in Colonia.  After the funeral services, there will be a celebration of her life with family and friends.

In lieu of flowers and in honor of Sophie’s love for home and family, donations in her memory may be made to the Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity, 33 Meadow Road, Asheville, North Carolina 28803 or online at ashevillehabitat.org

Mrs. Ledzian, the daughter of the late Elizabeth Dudek Szurlej and the late Jacob Szurlej was born in Poland and she came to the United  States in 1934, living in Bayonne and Elizabeth, New Jersey.  She then settled in Roselle, New Jersey where she resided from 1962 to 2005, at which time she relocated to Asheville, North Carolina.

While residing in New Jersey, Mrs. Ledzian was a communicant of St. Adalbert Roman Catholic Church in Elizabeth and St Joseph the Carpenter Roman Catholic Church in Roselle, where she was also a member of its’ Rosary Society.

Mrs. Ledzian was predeceased by her husband, Tadeusz Ledzian in 2001; her son, Dennis T. Ledzian in 2009; her sister, Mary Szurlej Majcher in 1985; her brother, Henry Szurlej in 2011 and her sister-in-law, May Szurlej in 2018. 

Mrs. Ledzian is survived by her daughter, Christine Brighton; her son-in-law, John Brighton; her brother-in-law, John Majcher Sr.; her daughter-in-law, Joan Ledzian; her two grandsons, Steven Ledzian in Singapore and Brad Ledzian in Florida; her four nieces, Diana Szurlej Urban and her husband, Paul, Jane Majcher, Susan Majcher and her partner, Tim, and Patricia Majcher,  as well as, her three nephews, Richard Ledzian and his wife, Antoinette, Stephen Szurlej and his wife, Anna and John Majcher, Jr. and his wife, Vicky.
