Manuel “Manny” J. Fernandez
Mr. Manuel “Manny” J. Fernandez, also known to his friends as Manuel “Manny” J. Freijomil, 78, died Friday, November 30, 2018 in the Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth, NJ.
In accordance with Mr. Fernandez’s wishes, his cremation was private.
On Saturday, December 15th. from 10:45-11:00AM, family and friends are asked to gather directly at the Immaculate Conception Church, 417 Union Ave. in Elizabeth, where a memorial mass will be offered at 11:00AM. The inurnment of his cremains in the niche in the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, New Jersey will be private.
Mr. Fernandez, the son of the late Victoria and Manuel M. Freijomil, was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey and he spent his entire life living there and enjoying his city.
He was employed by Interbake Foods, formerly the Burry Biscuit Company, in Elizabeth, NJ for over 25 years, maintaining the oven production of all of the baked goods.
Mr. Fernandez was also a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the U.S. Army.
Manny was a loyal and dedicated supporter of high school sports for five decades, especially his beloved home town Elizabeth High School and also St. Anthony basketball in Jersey City.
His allegiance and knowledge of New Jersey high school basketball programs was legendary and matched only by his kindness and generosity to student athletes, friends and fellow fans.
Manny was a most decent man whose like will not soon be seen again in hundreds of New Jersey high school fields and gyms. He believed in the honesty and intelligence of the human spirit and quietly was an inspiration to his select circle of family, friends and particularly his beloved wife, Mary Elizabeth.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Fernandez was also predeceased by his sister, Dolores Coyle; his step-mother, Victoria Ann Freijomil and his step-brother and step-sister.
Mr. Fernandez is survived by his wife of 36years, Mary Elizabeth Hudak Fernandez; his sister, Dr. Josephine A. Donovan; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and many friends.
