Dorothy, the daughter of the late Jennie Pekrul-Kurtz Murawski and the late Edward J. Murawski, was born in Linden, New Jersey. She resided in Linden until she moved to Monroe Township where she lived from September of 2010 to November of 2016, when Dorothy relocated to New Providence.
Dorothy was employed by the City of Linden for thirty-eight years and she served as the municipal tax collector for fourteen of those years, before retiring on July 1, 1992. She was a life time member of the State Tax Collectors & Treasurers Association of New Jersey. Dorothy proceeded along the organizational ladder, holding the positions of corresponding secretary, first, second & third vice president culminating with that of the presidency. She chaired and served on various committees during her active membership. Concurrently, Dorothy held many offices, including that of President of the Union County Tax Collectors & Treasurers Association.
Dorothy was a commissioner of the Housing Authority for the City of Linden for ten years and she served as its’ chairperson for two years. Since one of the Linden’s Senior Citizens low income buildings was named for her father, Edward J. Murawski, Dorothy’s appointment as a commissioner was very special to her & she hoped that her service to the people of the City of Linden made a difference. Dorothy’s commission ended in May of 1996.
Since 1979, Dorothy was the financial secretary for the Polish National Home of Linden, doing business in our city for more than fifty years prior to its’ closing on February 2, 1995.
In her spare, time, Dorothy was an avid bowler for over twenty five years. She and her husband, John, were also lovers of Polish music. They followed different polka bands throughout the country especially their favorite, John Gora & Gorale, where they could get together with friends, old & new, enjoy the sounds of live Polish music and dance the night away.
Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, John F. Margavitz on July 21, 2015 and her sister, Janet Hasko.
A special thank you to the Lantern Hill’s caring staff and care givers, Patience Asare and John Gora. Thank you to her niece, Jennifer Malicher and her son Spencer, for their occasional visits and to Elaine H. and Janet N. for keeping in touch. Dziekuje.
