Mrs. Muriel A. McManus O’Dea, 96, died Saturday, December 23, 2017 in her home in Linden, New Jersey.
Visitation will take place in the Kowalski Funeral Home, 515 Roselle St., Linden, on Thursday, December 28th. from 5:00 – 7:00PM. On Friday, December 29th. at 9:45AM, family and friends will meet directly at Holy Family R.C. Church, Linden where a funeral mass will be offered at 10:00AM, followed by the burial in the family plot in Rosedale Cemetery in Linden. Please omit flowers. Donations in Mrs. O’Dea’s memory may be made to either St. John the Apostle R.C. Church, 1 Ridgeview Terrace, Clark, NJ 07066 or to Holy Family R.C. Church, 201 Monroe Street, Linden, NJ 07037
Mrs. O’Dea, the daughter of the late Ann Dwyer McManus and the late Thomas J. McManus, Sr. was born in Brooklyn, New York but Mrs. O’Dea spent the majority of her ninety-six years in Linden, New Jersey.
Mrs. O’Dea started working in the legal department for the City of Linden, but progressed rapidly to become the secretary in the Mayor’s Office. While at her job for fifty-two years, she served several mayors, including Mayor Myles J. McManus and Mayor John T. Gregorio, until her retirement in 1991.
Predeceased by her husband, Cormac P. O’Dea on March 27, 1989 and her brother, Thomas J. McManus Jr., Mrs. O’Dea is survived by her brother, James McManus; her five nephews and nieces, Thomas J. McManus III, Maureen Ellen Fichter, Lynn Ellen Opydke, Kevin McManus and Coleen Smythe; six great nieces and nephews and six great great nieces and nephews.
